The concert was one of three concerts, announced collectively as BEAT 69. The first concert was Donovan on November 30th. At the second concert on December 6th the headliner was Ten Years After. The third concert was announced as Eric Clapton Delaney, Bonnie & Friends. That George Harrison would participate was only announced in the last days leading up to the concert. This naturally boosted ticket sales and the concert sold out quickly. In a hurry, an extra concert was therefore arranged, which was never announced in the newspapers. This also quickly sold out. George Harrison was initially against the extra concert, as he believed that most of the audience came to see him.
George Harrison arrived on December 9th, and stayed at the Palace Hotel. He was wearing a long-haired coat, orange sunglasses and an orange scarf. He refused to talk to anyone and refused photographers to take pictures as this would shift the focus away from Delaney & Bonnie. According to the newspapers, however, he managed to move around in Copenhagen anonymously during the day on December 10th.
The first warm-up band on stage was the Danish psychedelic / progressive rock trio, Young Flowers, formed in Copenhagen in the summer of 1967 by Jens Dahl (lead guitar), Peter Ingemann (bass, vocals) and Ken Gudman (drums).
Subsequently the American-born British-based soul singer P. P. Arnold took the stage. Among the songs she performed was Bob Dylan's 'I Shall Be Released'.
George Harrison stayed completely in the background during both concerts.
During the break, George and Billy stayed in a separate room while the rest of the band stayed in the large artist room jamming and singing, among other things, "Just A Closer Walk With Thee." George gave a short interview to DR journalist Ole Reitov and jammed with Billy Preston over The Edwin Hawkins Singers song "Oh Happy Day." Part of Ole Reitov's interview was broadcast as a feature on a radio program during 1970. The program title and date are unknown. According to George's own memoirs, his jam with Billy became the source of "My Sweet Lord."
