Tony Sheridan - Concerts 1989

The concerts mentioned here are those we have found documentation for. There may be more, and we would be happy to receive information, photos, newspaper reports, etc. Please use the contact form.

February 15th: Kridthuset, Esbjerg
February 18th: Aalborghallen, Aalborg

At the first two shows of the year, it is unclear who played in Tony's backing band. The event in Aalborg was held jointly with the Stakladen in Aarhus. Tony Sheridan performed only in Aalborg, while the other bands performed at both places on the same day. It was The Spotnicks, The Easybeats and then The Rocking Ghosts who were reunited for this event.

On February 15th, 1989, I went to a concert with Tony Sheridan Band at Kridthuset in Esbjerg. So many years later, the details that I can remember are few, but it's funny to be asked about this 40 years later. At the time, I was most surprised that someone who had had anything to do with The Beatles would give a concert here in my backyard. Since my family has always been on time, we arrived quite early at the concert. In fact, I was assumed to be part of the crew, because I was asked to help lift some gear into place. Before the concert, I was sitting at the bar having a beer when I noticed that Tony was sitting next to me, and we exchanged a "Cheers" :-). I don't remember much about the music itself. He played "My Bonnie" and a few songs from "Here And Now", his brand new LP.

April 20th: Døllefjelde-Musse Marked, Døllefjelde-Musse

The concert at the Døllefjelde-Musse market was presented as a 60s gala, with Jørgen De Mylius as emcee. Other bands were The Rocking Ghosts and Red Squares.

June 2nd: Hjallerup Marked, Hjallerup

At the Hjallerup marked, Tony Sheridan performed in the family tent between 9 pm and 11 pm. It is unclear whether he performed as a solo artist.

The three 5-hour 60's shows were arranged by 'Skagen Idrætsklub', 'Convoy Buddy' and 'Dronningborg Boldklub'. At the Skagen Stadion, Tony Sheridan performed together with The Tremeloes, Johnny & The Hurricanes, The Jordanaires, Charlie McCoy and Jodle Birge. A disappointingly low number of spectators meant a large deficit for the organizers, which was, however, covered by the sponsors. At the Convoy Trucker and Accessories Exhibition in Odense, Tony Sheridan performed with the same artists as the day before, except for the Tremeloes. At the Dronningborg Stadium Tony performed with the same artists as in Skagen. There were only about 700 paying spectators, so again the event resulted in a large deficit.

A new tour was arranged from October 27th to December 3rd with the title 'Super Rock of the 60's'. On the whole tour Tony Sheridan, Johnny Paris from Johnny & The Moondogs, as well as Derek Leckenby and Barry Whitwam from Herman's Hermits performed. The backing band was Montana Band. A total of 12 musicians, all of whom traveled on Montana Band's yellow Leyland bus. The tour included two concerts in the Faroe Islands. The band flew from Billund in a rented plane, a Mitsubishi MU-2B-60 Marquise, “Esther” from the Fyn Air Taxi (The plane was later sold in the USA, and crashed on February 11th 2000 in Idaho).

Two of the concerts had different backing bands. At the concert at the Fristedet on November 9th, the Montana Band was replaced by a local band from Aalborg, The Arrows, since the Montana Band had an event in Hvidovre, Copenhagen. At the concert at the Rådhuskroen on November 17th, Tony Sheridan performed with Ingvar Kristensen and The Lunchbreaks.

At the two concerts in the Faroe Islands, the local band The Cream Crackers was also on stage.

On November 23rd, at the concert at the Alexis, the organizer expected around 200 guests, but only 42 bought tickets.

In the newspaper 'Aalborg Stiftstidende', from March 31th, 1991, it's mentioned that Tony Sheridan 'dropped by' at an arrangement at the Hotel Hadsund in 1989. It has not been possible to find documentation for this event, but Hadsund is mentioned in the Montana band's calendar for November 29th 1989. It is not known, however, whether it's the same event.

In 1989, the Montana Band included Tue Gudnitz, Pauli Andreasen, Lars-Erik Quortrup and Flemming Ebbesen Jensen.

I was there quotes

- Flemming E. Jensen (drummer with Montana Band)

We got on the tour because we had bought a big bus earlier that year. Thus, it would be available for both Hermans Hermits, Johnny & the Hurricanes and Tony Sheridan. It was our legendary manager Calle, from CB & Ole B Booking, who, thanks to his gigantic network, was able to arrange a whole month of “Super Rock of the Sixties” as the tour was called. Tony was a hippie who very much lived in the present. The first meeting was supposed to be a rehearsal of his repertoire, but he didn’t think it was necessary. So, we just chatted and had a few beers, and when we went on stage, it was without a set list. Tony just hit a chord, then shouted a key and we just had to fall in. Even though we were a top professional party band at the time with 100+ jobs a year, we only knew half of the songs - at most - but it didn’t matter. We just had to feel our way through, and we never got scolded afterwards, no matter how badly we had handled that concert.

The final performance took place at the Hjardemål Klithotel, a concert that went just spiffing. Tony was in his prime and couldn't stop at all - this resulted in a threat from Hermans Hermits' bassist, Geoff, that Tony would get a beating if we didn't "Get off the fucking stage NOW!!!" When we finally managed to finish our set, Tony went upstairs and spewed in the sink because this concert had been such an amazing experience :-). Of course, we always played My Bonnie.
